On a meeting held in October 1955 in Belgrade it has been decided to establish the Terminological Commission attached to the International Committee of Slavonic Scholars.
In 1958–1963 the Terminological Commission which consisted of two sub-commissions – linguistics (chaired by O.V. Isachenko) and literature (chaired by D.D. Blagoy) was chaired by D.D. Blagoy.
Prof. L. Andreychin’s initiative to compile the Dictionary of Slavonic Linguistic Terminology was approved on the 1960 Prague Session of the International Terminological Commission (ICLT) affiliated to the International Committee of Slavonic Scholars. The Dictionary was compiled by: the Czech Linguistic Commission (the Institute for the Czech Language was the central institution for the compilation of the dictionary); Sorbian Terminological Committee (its work took place at the Linguistic Department of The Institute of Sorbian Ethnography and the members of the committeewere Jenč, H. Faska, H. Šewc, P. Völkel); the Ukrainian terminological committee (chaired first by A.S. Mel’nychuk, and then O.B. Tkachenko and A.I. Bagmutova; the members of the Committee were A. A. Beletskiy, K.M. Gnatyuk, M.A. Zhovtobryukh, I.I. Kovalyk, N.A. Moskalenko, and V.I. Perebeynos with the assistance of other leading scholars as V.M. Rusanivskiy, L.S. Palamarchuk, T.B. Lukinova, N.P. Romanova); Belorussian Terminological Committee (under the guidance of M.R. Sudnik; members A.I. Kiselevskiy, I.I. Luchits-Fedorets, А.Е. Milkchnevich, A.I. Poluzhnui, G.A. Tsykhun). Russian equivalents were entrusted first to the commission member A.B. Shapiro, and then the Commission chair, first V.G. Kostomarov and then А.А. Reformatskiy. Bulgarian equivalents were collected by L. Andreychin in close cooperation with a number of other Bulgarian linguists. Slovak linguistic terminology was collected by members of the L. Štur Institute of Linguistics. The Polish terminology compilation was coordinated by W. Doroszewski in cooperation with numerous other members of Polish research centers; D. Buttler and H. Satkiewicz completed and revised Polish terminology for DSLT. Macedonian equivalents were prepared by B. Vidoeski, R. Igrinova-Skalvska, B. Koneski, K. Toshev. Serbo-Croat equivalents were collected by P. Ivic and D. Brozovic. The Slovene section was chaired by T. Logar, and then J. Toporišič; equivlents were also checked by F. Tomšič and A. Bajec. The compilation of English equivalents was entrusted to R. Auty, L. Newman, J. Vachek and A. Skaličková, French to P. Garde; German to R. Růžička (with the assistance of G. Bergman, E. Eichler, E. Ising, R. Klappenbach, W. Sperber, A. Steube, D. Viehweger; G. From 1963 to 1968 the Commission on Linguistic Terminology (under this name) continued work chaired by O.V. Isachenko. The head of the Commission on terminology of literature (under this name) became Y. Kryzhanivs’kyi.
In the period 1968–1978 both commissions were permanently chaired by Y. Kryzhanivs’kyi (the Commission on Linguistic Terminology) and Yan Gorets’kyi (the Commission on the Terminology of Literature), the latter chaired the commission until 1998.
In 1977 the 1st Volume of the Dictionary of Slavonic Terminology, which included 2266 notions-terms, systematically organized with equivalents in 11 Slavonic languages (Czech, Slovakian, Polish, Lusatian Sorbian, Russian, Ukrainian, Belorussian, Bulgarian, Macedonian, Serbo-Croat, Slovenian) and 3 non-Slavonic languages (English, French, German) was published in Prague.
In 1979 the 2nd volume of the Dictionary including alphabetical registers of terms in all 14 languages was published.
From 2008 to 2013 the Terminology Commission (СлавТерм) was chaired by V. Tatarinov (Russia). The members of the Commission were: Russia – В. Татаринов (chair), В. Кульпина (deputy chair), С. In 2009 the 1st volume of a theoretical terminology journal launched by the Terminology Commission Slavonic Terminology was published (Славянское терминоведение: теоретический журнал по проблемам терминоведения и терминологистики / гл. ред. В.А. Татаринов. 2009. № 1).
Following the decision of XV International Convention of Slavists held 20–27 August 2013 V. Ivashchenko (Ukraine) was in charge of the Terminology Commission under the International Committee of Slavonic Scholars (ТC ICSS) for the period 2013–2018. In 2017, based on the results of the International Symposium, which took place in Belgrade in May 2016, a collection of scientific papers of the Словенска терминолгиja данас (ed. P. Piper, V. Jovanoviћ, Kњ 28) was published. In the same year, international electronic scientific journal Bulletin of the Terminology Commission under the ICSS was registered.
2018 was the year of publication of the first international collective monograph by the members of the ICSS, Slavic Termіnology of the End of the 20th and the Beginning of the 21st Сenturies (scientific editor V.L. Ivashchenko), presented at the 16th International Congress of Slavists, which took place on August 20–27 in Belgrade.
The XVІ International Congress of Slavists chaired by V. Ivashchenko (Ukraine ) accredited the TC ISS for 2018–2023. The Commission began work with the following members: Ukraine – V. On February 24, 2022, the Russian Federation launched a full-scale military invasion of independent and peaceful Ukraine, destroying houses, kindergartens, schools, hospitals, maternity hospitals, strategic facilities and settlements with multiple rocket launchers and ballistic missiles. The Terminological Commission under the ICSS strongly condemns the unprecedented military aggression of Russia against the independent Ukraine, and therefore ceases cooperation with the Russian delegation of the commission (official statement). We call on the world scientific community to make every possible effort to end the war!
